Golf Swing Mechanics
By: Gregory Rossi
Throughout my own journey to learn the golf swing mechanics I have taken lessons, hit countless amounts of balls at the range, and read numerous books on everything from the golf swing, to golf exercises, to the mental approach of the game.
During that time, and after having multiple epiphanies with my own swing, I have come to the following two conclusions:
1. Learning to swing the golf club properly is not as complicated as some people make it seem.
and…
2. The reason most people fail is because:
...a) They don’t know where to start.
...b) All the tips, drills, and swing thoughts you read are missing the proper context to make them effective.
The last part is where many golf magazines, unfortunately, fail you and its many other readers.
The golf swing mechanics they are telling you about in their advice sections are correct, but they are tiny snippets that become ineffective if you don't have a big picture of the golf swing. Also, they tend to focus your attention on these small details and then you lose sight of how the details are supposed to fit into the full swing.
In this section I will give you the small snippets and details. I will also tie them into the bigger picture of the golf swing, and do it in a clear, concise manner.
There are five golf swing mechanics I will touch upon to help you learn proper golf swing technique. They are:
1. Proper Golf Grip
2. Proper Golf Stance
3. Swing Hip Rotation
4. The Golf Backswing
5. Your Natural Golf Swing
This is also the sequence I recommend you use to learn these golf swing mechanics.
Another big problem golfers run into is they want to improve the golf swing but they don’t know what to fix first, or in some cases what is even broken! In both cases they go to the range and try to fix everything and anything all at once and end up getting nowhere, and usually confusing themselves even more.
Don’t bite off more than you can chew, so take each step one at a time. Once you square away the proper golf grip and proper golf stance, you can move on to the more complex golf swing techniques of learning swing hip rotation, the golf backswing, and, finally, to letting your natural golf swing take over to fire through the ball.
I also highly recommend that you look at your swing in the mirror. Use the mirror to practice certain movements and hit certain points that I will show you throughout this section. The mirror will allow you to improve your golf swing by helping you groove your movements while making sure those movements are getting you into the right positions. It is a way to check your golf swing technique.
Again, my goal throughout this guide is to focus on the basics and to keep things as simple as possible, while still giving you the context you need to conceptualize the golf swing and understand what you are trying to accomplish in each step.
Finally, I would remiss if I didn't mention that my thoughts and ideas on how to swing a golf club have come through a combination of my own experiences practicing and playing, reading countless books, articles and magazines and the lessons I have had with my instructor David Glenz and our many discussions on the proper golf swing mechanics.
David is a former member of the PGA Tour and in 1998 was named "National Teacher of the Year" by PGA of America. He has given lessons to over 100 PGA, LPGA and Senior Tour players and is one of Golf Magazines Top 100 Teachers. The David Glenz Golf Academy has golf schools located in New Jersey and Florida and David is the Director of Golf and Course Designer of Black Oak Golf Club opening soon in Long Valley, New Jersey.
So, if you like what you’ve read and want to learn how to really swing a golf club like the pros do, please read on!
